The production of palm oil in Central and South America and Southeast Asia is an important industry. After the brown ripens, the fruit separates from the stem, leaving an empty fruit bunch (EFB) as a waste. Every year, tens of millions of tons of EFB are generated, and research on the possibility of utilizing this waste is also ongoing.
EFB is by-product of oil palm fruit after being pressed, with rich cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin components. They can be recycled and reused in various ways:
- Composting: EFB can be used as organic material for composting treatment. Through the action of microorganisms, EFB can be decomposed into nutrient rich organic fertilizers for agricultural production, improving soil structure and fertility.
- Biofuels: EFB can be converted into biofuels through technologies such as pyrolysis, gasification, and anaerobic fermentation. For example, pyrolysis can convert EFB into bio oil, biochar, and combustible gases; Anaerobic fermentation can produce biogas.
- Pulp and papermaking: EFB fibers can be used to produce pulp, replace some wood resources, and reduce dependence on forests. EFB pulp can be used to manufacture paper, cardboard, and other paper products.
- Fiberboard and building materials: EFB fibers can be processed into medium density fiberboard (MDF) and other building materials for use in construction and furniture manufacturing.
- Biodegradable plastics: Cellulose in EFB can be extracted and converted into biodegradable plastics, replacing petrochemical plastics and reducing environmental pollution.
- Feed: EFB can be processed and used as a raw material for animal feed, providing cellulose and other nutrients.
- Soil amendment: After being shredded and treated, EFB can be used as a soil amendment to improve soil permeability and water retention.
By making reasonable use of EFB, not only can the pressure of waste treatment be reduced, but economic value can also be created, promoting sustainable development.
