Rock Wool Recycling Line: Recycling Value Analysis and Market Prospect Outlook

1

Rock wool is an inorganic fiber material made from natural igneous rocks such as basalt and diabase as the main raw materials, which are melted at a high temperature above 1450°C and then processed through a high-speed centrifugal process. It is widely used in fields such as building exterior wall insulation, industrial equipment thermal insulation, and ship cabin fire protection. However, widespread application has also brought about a problem that cannot be ignored: the generation of large amounts of waste rock wool. According to industry statistics, a medium-sized rock wool production factory can generate thousands to more than ten thousand tons of waste slag balls, waste boards, and edge trimmings each year. These wastes have low density and large volume. The traditional landfill method not only occupies a large amount of land resources, but the transportation and labor costs required also bring considerable environmental protection and operational pressure to enterprises.

Rock Wool Recycling Value: Market Opportunities Driven by Policy

The recycling and utilization value of rock wool waste is rapidly increasing with tighter policies and the deepening of resource concepts.

From the perspective of resource utilization value, waste rock wool is rich in oxides of silicon, aluminum, and calcium, and can be used as a cementitious material admixture to replace part of cement, or as a raw material for brickmaking and ceramic raw materials to achieve resource circulation. After shredding and grinding, rock wool fibers can be directly returned to the furnace and re-melted to make wool, forming closed-loop recycling. In addition, waste rock wool after activation treatment can also be made into heavy metal ion adsorbents for treating pollutants such as hexavalent chromium in wastewater, achieving "treating waste with waste."

From the perspective of policy drivers, regulations in major global economies are accelerating the industrialization of rock wool recycling. The EU's upcoming new legislation aims to increase the recycling rate of construction demolition waste, and it will become increasingly difficult for recyclable waste to enter landfills. Austria has clearly stipulated that from the beginning of 2027, landfill disposal of man-made mineral fiber waste will be completely prohibited. China has also listed "technical breakthroughs in the regeneration and utilization of thermal insulation materials" as a key task in its circular economy development plan, requiring the establishment of regional rock wool regeneration demonstration bases before 2025.

The implementation of landfill bans means that rock wool recycling has become a mandatory option. Enterprises that lay out rock wool shredding and recycling lines in advance will seize the initiative in the new round of green transformation.

Rock Wool Recycling Process and GEP ECOTECH Core Equipment

The core prerequisite for rock wool recycling and utilization is to shred waste rock wool to a suitable particle size for subsequent furnace re-melting, building material preparation, or functional material production. A complete rock wool shredding and recycling line usually includes the following stages:

Primary shredding stage → Grinding stage (pulverizing stage) → Dust removal and collection (assisting in discharging materials as well) → Finished product output

Production Line

GEP ECOTECH has been deeply engaged in the solid waste treatment field for more than ten years. Aiming at the material characteristics of rock wool-type mineral fibers and the requirements for output particle size, it has developed professional shredding and recycling equipment and complete-line solutions. According to the feed size of the customer's rock wool material, the GEP ECOTECH technical team will appropriately select a double-shaft shredder or a single-shaft shredder as the equipment for the pre-shredding stage, so as to simplify the disposal process and reduce equipment costs.

The rock wool material after pre-shredding enters the second grinding process for further refinement. GEP ECOTECH's GXB (H) series hammer mill is specially designed for the fine grinding needs of materials. It is equipped with a high-kinetic-energy rotor and an adjustable discharge screen. The discharge particle size can be precisely controlled below 10 mm, achieving efficient conversion of rock wool material from large boards to uniform particles, meeting the feed requirements for furnace re-melting or building material preparation.
